What is a non qualified distribution?

Trying to do my taxes. Retired. When free online turbo tax wizard asks me about my small pension, it asks me if it is a nonqualified distribution. What does that mean?

non qualified would be distributions taken before age 59 1/2

Are you sure you're in the right form? "Qualified Distribution" is a phrase more frequently used to describe Dividend income that qualifies for the special capital gains tax treatment. Make sure you're on a 1099 R for your retirement, and not a Schedule B or 1099Div.

That being said, a non-qualified distribution from retirement would refer to a distribution taken outside the parameters of the plan. Taking an early distribution, for example, might be considered non-qualified. Sounds to me like you'll have qualified distributions in that case.

Hope this helps!
