Does your previous employer pay part of your unemployment?

i was working with a friend of mine for a while, and i don't want him to have to pay if i file. i'm in california, if that's of any relevance

Only indirectly. Employers pay taxes into the unemployment fund. The tax rate they pay is based upon how much the state pays out in unemployment benefits for their former employees. Employers with a high turnover rate will pay a higher rate than those with low turnover rates.

You're welcome. TFTP. Report It

Yes they do. And you have to have a legitimate reason to collect. They will interview you as to what happened, as in the reason you are no longer working there. And the previous employer cannot contest it.

No, not if the claim is because you were laid off or fired from a later job. The earnings at the first job will be taken into account though if they fall within the time period to determine benefits.

I believe so, yes.
