Will I be penalized for filing my taxes late?

I filed my taxes (tried to) last night around 11pm and I barely made it by the midnight deadline (I procrastinated). I received an email early this morning telling me that there was errors found on my return (probably because I was rushing) so it didn't go through. Can I still file now and not be penalized or will I be penalized anyways? Or could I just file an extension without being penalized? I'm so confused...I hate taxes...

No. You cannot E-file. You must mail your income tax return.
This information applies to your Federal Tax Only!
Filing Late Penalty

The penalty for filing late is generally 5 percent per month, or part of a month, up to 25 percent of the amount of the tax shown due on the return.

Paying Late Penalty

The penalty for paying late is 1/2 of 1 percent per month, up to 25 percent of the unpaid amount due.

Waiver of Penalties

The IRS recognizes many people drop out of the system because of personal problems, including serious illness, a death in the family, or loss of financial records in a natural disaster. Depending on the situation, informing the IRS why returns have not been filed could result in a waiver of penalties.

Yes, you'll be penalized. There will be a late filing penalty, and then interest and penalties on any amount you owe at about 1% a month. (If you don't owe anything, then don't sweat it. You won't get any kind of a penalty.)

If you had filed for an extension, then you would have avoided the late filing penalty. But it's too late now. So just file your return as soon as you can, so as to avoid interest and penalties on the amount yo uowe.

Again, if you don't owe the IRS money, and are due a refund, you won't have any kind of a penalty.

i do know if they are not filed on tI'me you can file for an extension, but as far as being penalized im not sure since you just had an error, it shouldn't apply to you.
