What is a 1099G Michigan?

My Boyfriend recieved one today, I'm wondering what it is? Also, what does Itemized deductions mean? He does owe money to the state of michigan, does this have anything to do with it? Thanks!

I didn't do an itemized deduction, should I disregard this form?

A 1099G is a form showing payments made by the government to you. Itemized deductions is a term used when you take deductions line by line on your taxes, meaning you specifically labe each deduction that you take.

This is probably very simple.

When your boyfriend paid his state taxes in 2007 (for 2006), did he get a refund?

This is a form saying he got that refund.

If your boyfriend normally files a 1040EZ or 1040A, this is not taxable income. If he files a 1040 and takes the standard deduction, it's not taxable (these three are 70% of the population!). Only if he itemized and claimed those state taxes as a deduction (alternately people claimed sales tax) would he have to figure out if any of it was taxable.

In his case, ignore it.

A 1099G is for money paid out by the government, probably state government. Did he get unemployment comp this year? That could be what it is for.

If he got a refund last year from the state, he might have gotten this form. If he didn't itemize last year on his federal return and deduct state and local taxes, and the form is for the amount of last year's state refund, he can disregard it. Otherwise, if it's for unemployment comp he received or for anything else, he will have to show it on his federal tax return this year.
