Filing your federal tax return without a W2 form.?

Can I file my federal taxes without my W2 forms, by using my last check stub.

No wait. Your employer has until Jan. 31, to have it in the mail. If you don't receive your W2 by Feb 15, 08 Contact your employer if your employer will not provide the W2 then contact IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and they can contact your employer.

wait for it, wait for it... and then contact your employer(s) if you don't hvae it by 2.1

last year you needed to wait until 2-17 to file with out the W-2. but in order to do this you couldn't do the e-filing it had to be paper and took so much longer. You had to do your best to get your W-2's from your employer.

No, you can not. You must have a W-2 in hand to file. (And it's a common misconception that you can just wait until Feb 15 and file without one.)

The ONLY exception is when an employer fails to provide a W-2 AND you have made a reasonable effort to secure it without success. The first step on that road is to file a missing W-2 complaint with the IRS. The IRS won't even accept those complaints until Feb 15th.

If the IRS is unable to force the employer to provide one after you file your complaint -- unusual but it does happen -- then and only then are you allowed to use alternate methods to file without the W-2. Even in that situation the IRS recommends that you wait until just before the filing deadline since the employer could finally come through. AND it will delay the processing of your return until the IRS can verify the information you provided with your return.
