Are you required to file state AND federal taxs?

I'm thinking of doing my own taxes with turbotax. I notice that it is free for federal, but it says additional for state. Whats the difference? And are you required to do both. I noticed on my check that their is only federal withholding, so where do is the state income tax withheld. I hope this question makes sense, because I am a bit confused.

Ok..I live in Texas, so I guess I got my answer...thanks v b.

Leo, it depends on what states you have income in. If you live in Texas, you don't need a state return because the state of Texas doesn't have an income tax.

yes you have to file state and federal tax

The first poster is accurate - you need to find out if your state collects income tax.

If you live in a state that has income taxes, you are required to file. I have used turbo tax for years and it is idiot proof, I buy the one that includes the state taxes.

It depends entirely on what state you live in - some states do not have a state personal income tax...the list of states with no personal income tax is as follows:

Alaska
Florida
Nevada
South Dakota
Texas
Washington
Wyoming

Hope it helps!
