There is lots of talk atm about the abolition of the 10p tax rate. What actually is the 10p tax rate?

Up until the beginning of April the first 拢2300 of tax (for everybody)was at 10% that has been abolished and you now pay 20%
However the next chunk of earnings was taxed at 22%, now it's 20%

The 10% tax rate, or lower rate band, was introduced some years ago to help the lower paid, and give the unemployed more incentive to work. One of Gordon Brown's last acts as Chancellor of the Exchequer was to abolish it. From 6th April, everyone will start paying tax at 20%. Last year the start rate was 10%, and went up to 22%.
The resulting backlash has happened because only people earning less than 拢5646 or over 拢16501 will benefit. Those earning between those figures will be worse off, amounts graded in accordance with pay rates, people earning about 拢8000 will be the most badly affected, paying 拢160 per annum more tax.
