When will my mums taxes be paid back to her?

She earnt less then the lower limit so how long does it take to get it back?

We are now just past the end of the last tax year. Form P50 only applies to in-year refunds, so it is too late for that.
Now I don't know if your Mum was in employment as at 05/04/08, or if she was in employment with the same employer all year. If so, all she has to do is write a short note to tax office, send form P60, and ask for computation. If she had several jobs, wasn't working or getting Jobseekers on 5th April, she can still write to tax office, and send any P60s and forms P45. She should also tell staff a complete employment history since 06/04/07. The easiest way to do that is complete form P91 (download from hmrcp91). Reply should be received in four weeks, but could take longer owing to volume of correspondence at this time of year.
If she does nothing, she will get either a refund or an enquiry from tax office, depending how much information they have. It will take a long time, probably next autumn/winter.
I have assumed Mum was employed. If she was self-employed, refund will not happen until her Tax Return is sent back to HMRC and processed. That could take a couple of months or more.

You know, some people actually do get money returned to them, however, with me it never happened. You have to fill out some form, go and chat to some person, and wait a few weeks to get it back. But bear in mind, the tax year just ended - I doubt she'll get it.

Hi

If she is a 'normal' employee she will need to put in a form P50 - available from http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/more-...

If she is self employed, or gets a tax return normally, just get the tax return in fast (online is best) and the refund will be sorted out reasonably quickly.

The tax man is usually pretty good at getting the repayment back to you (especially by direct bank transfer), although the speed can depend on how busy they are, because that can slow up how quickly they get round to looking at her application for a refund.

Although others have said this is difficult, it really isn't! You don't even need a form!

The tax year runs 6 April - 5 April. If in that tax year, you earn less than the Taxable Allowance associated with your tax code, you are entitled to not pay Income Tax. Please remember National Insurance is different, calculated differently, and cannot be reclaimed.

So, in the tax year 6 Apr 07 - 5 April 08 (the one just gone), most people have the tax code 522L. The only time the rules are different is if you owe tax from previous years, or are a director of a company. It could also involve Child Tax Credits and things like that, but, lets look at the example of 522L.

So, this actually means you can earn 拢5225 in the 07/08 tax year (as the L means 5 - so 340L = 拢3405). Now, you need to add up all your Gross Pay (before tax). If this is less that 拢5225, all you have to do is add up the tax you have paid, and then contact your tax office. To find out which tax office is yours, you need to ask your employer, as they will have their contact details and Tax Reference Number. You will need this.

Then, write to that office. It can be very simple, but don't forget to include your name, date of birth, National Insurance Number and your employer's Tax Office Reference. This will help t
