Do people in America pay tax in the same way as we do in the UK?

If so, how is the money used, since I don't think they have free health care as we do?
No offence intended in this question by the way!

a certain percentage of our gross money is deducted as taxes. You then file in April of the following year and are allowed to deduct certain items from your taxes, and also you get dollar credits for yourself and your dependents which you are allowed to deduct. Depending upon how much gross annual income you have, what your tax deductions are, and how many dependents you have, how much taxes you paid in, it is then determined how much tax you either owe in addition to what you have paid, or if you get a refund on some of that money. It is a very complicated process and one that causes people to want to pull their hair out.

In addition to taxes, we also pay into the Social Security Administration. Social Security in the US is like the Pension fund in the UK and Australia. I know that you refer to Social Security like the US refers to Welfare. So one has to be very careful stating that they receive social security payments from the US as people willl think they are getting welfare payments.

We also pay a portion of Medicare -- which is the insurance coverage for the seniors and those who are disabled.

Then in addition, we also pay State Tax which is configured much like the federal taxes listed above. We also have GST in most states and in some cases we have City Taxes also.
We pay our real estate taxes, and taxes on our cars annually.
We pay road taxes. I think that is all but there may be more.

I hope this clarifies your question.

EDIT: The money is used to pay salaries of all government employees, senators, congressmen, President and Vice President. It is used for our military and we have five different branches of Military. It is used to buy supplies for the miliatry. It is used to fund wars and "events and actions". There are many different ways the Government can find to spend the money. It is also used to help support the poor and those with low incomes. In some cases it is used to offer scholarships to deserving students. There are a lot of ways the government helps.

We pay no where near the taxes you all do. But everyone here thinks we do lol.

income, social security and medicare taxes here are deducted, automatically, from your paycheck.
