Question regarding USA customs form?

My sis in USA asked her husband to send gifts she had bought for my kids for xmas to the UK. He done this but on the customs form he ticked merchandise instead of gift, anyone know what difference this makes when i recieve the gifts?

Any ideas how much tax will roughly be, the presents are footwear to the value of $600.

So many people make the opposite mistake (putting gift when it isn't) that Customs will look at the items anyway.

If the total value of the gifts were more than $100, it won't make a difference. Once you exceed the gift limit, the entire value of the items are subject to tax (there's not even a $100 deduction).

Yeah you'll get charged inport tax I think.

Happened to me once, cost me $300 to import a stinking photo album!

If you list as merchandise, that implies that the item is for re-sale and you have to do a customs entry and pay tax.

If it's listed on the form as a gift, then you usually don't have to prepare the customs entry and/or pay import duties.
