Why is my daughter paying emergancy tax?

my daughter has just been paid from her first job. Its a part time role as she is still at college,

the post is a temp/ christmas position. but she been paying emergancy tax which has basically sallowed up almost half of her pay!

this has also happened to the other temps. she has spoken to her manager and hes told her he doesnt know what to do about it.

has this happened to anyone else, and if so how did you go about claiming it back?

It is quite common for managers in big business not to know about tax requirements. Quite often the relevant forms are processed by payroll at head office. If no form P46 or form P85S has been given to her to sign, employer may be deducting basic rate tax 22%. Do her payslips show code BR? The manager should be able to give her a contact telephone number, and when she phones, she should have her payroll number to hand.
If she is only working for the Christmas (and maybe later Easter) holidays, she should ask for form P85S be sent to her to sign. If the job goes on throughout term-time, she will be treated as a normal employee, (even if her earnings are covered by her personal tax allowance), and she should get a form P46 to complete, to say it is her first, and only job. Either of these forms will authorise her employer to put her on the right code number, and make any refund due.
It sounds as though the employer compliance isn't very good as far as tax is concerned. If it isn't sorted by the time she leaves, she can download form P50 from the HMRC site, and send it to the employer's tax office. Reference will be on form P45 they will give her if she leaves. If that falls through, as a last resort, she can claim her refund after the end of the tax year on 05/04/07, but she shouldn't have to wait that long.

A lot of people get charged emergency tax when they start a job.She should get any overpayment back in her next pay

Because she has not got a P45, but she ask her employer to complete a form P46, which enable her to claim her tax allowance.

she kneeds to either hand a p.45 in - if she don't have a p.45 she kneeds to get a p.46 off her employer, once it's sent away and sorted the tax will be added to her wage. her employer should know this, when she leaves the job she will ge her p.45 sent to her for her next job.

If this is just a job over the Christmas holidays, then she should ask her manager or payroll dept for form P38(s). She signs this to say her income this tax year will be below 拢5225 and the tax she has had deducted already will be reapid and no more will be deducted.
Form P46 procedure is for a normal, term time job.

Your daughter will need to speak to the payroll office who deal with her pay. The payroll office will contact the tax office and get the correct tax code for your daughter and once this has been corrected your daughter will get the tax that she has payed on her next pay date. It can take up to 3 weeks to get sorted. I had this problem with both my 18 year and 17 year old daughters.
