Tax codes, emergency or not?

1 started a new job in september and gave up the Job seekers allowance. My first weeks tax code was W1 552L. after sending in the P45 given to me by the JSA dept by tax code is still W1 552l, which is an emergency code? Am I on the right tax code? All feedback will be apprieciated. RemiTa

No you are on the wrong tax code you would need to speak to your payroll head office they should sort this out for you any overpayment that you have pain in tax you will get it back when your tax code is correct.

No, you should now be on a cumulative code. You need to ring HMRC (your employer will tell you the office which deals with them) and ask them what info they need to put you on a proper code. Once this is issued, your employer will refund your overpaid tax.

Yes the W1 or LX is an emergency code which gives you your normal tax free allowance of 拢5220 for the whole year but unlike the normal 522L doesn't allow for any overpaid tax to be refunded as it is on a weekly basis and not a cumulative basis.

This is a temporary code while the taxman checks you out If you have a refund due you will eventually get it but it takes time
