Tax codes, please help?

What does this tax code mean? is an emergency code

W1 522L or 522l W1 waht is the difference

522L (W1)
Is an emergency tax code....
This means you are paying slightly more than if it was just 522L....
be sure you've handed in a P45 or filled out a P46 to make sure they get your tax code sorted...and you may even get a refund!

The W1 refers to the fact that you will be taxed on a week 1 basis - usually because the payroll department have not had confirmed details of your earnings so far during the tax year (the details on your P45).

In simple terms it means that every week you will pay tax as if it was the first week of the tax year. If you have been in continuous employment since the beginning of the year this won't make a lot of difference to you.

As tax is charged on an annual basis - if you have not got any earnings for the current year you will get back any tax that you pay now once the yearly figures have been verified.

The 552L part tells you that you have a tax free allowance of 5,220 pounds for the current tax year.
