(UK) What is the average annual salary increase (roughly) for an employee in the UK?

I have just worked out that over the length of time I have been with my current employer, my annual salary rise on average works out at 拢600! That's a bit poo isn't it? I know teachers get 拢1,500 per year extra, have I been hard-done-by or what?

Thanks

There is no official annual increase, and it varies dramatically accross sectors. As you point out teachers (to start with) get reasonable incremental pay rises, as do police... whereas some get non (not even inflationary pay rises).

There is no requirement for your employer to do this, so long as you get at least minimum wage. I suspect that if somone did work it out 拢600 would be well above average.

Indeed, if you consider the average wage in the UK is about 拢26k - there is no way that people, on average, can be increasing their wages every year by anything near that.

Most larger companies will benchmark their payscales against an industry average for a qualified person, with scope to reward better performers.

If you think you are being unfairly paid, ask yourself:

a) would I get paid more in another company for doing the same job?
b) how much extra do I know now, that I didn't when I was taken on?
c) in terms of productivity, how much extra am I doing now?

If you can honestly answer to the above that you would get paid better elsewhere, you are a signficantly more knowledgeable employee and a significantly more productive employee - then you would have ground to ask for a rise.

If not, move jobs?

You'll need to check your company policy on annual increments. It may be linked to the rate of annual inflation or some other guide. If you are not happy, move on.

Usually in line with inflation. Mine was 4% this year, but then again 4% of bu***r all is still bu***r all!

A lot of people don't get annual increases.

All depends whether you're an unskilled road sweeper or an established professional.

We are getting 2.4% this year and that is 648 pounds over the year......I would say that most people who work for the same employer don't get as much as I do either.

Salary increases for most companies are based on a percetage of your current salary. This will vary depending on the comapny and how good a year they've had and how good/bad your performance review is.

Currently most companies seem to be offering between 0 and 4 (maybe 5)%. (If you're earning 20,000 then a 600 increase is 3%).

Yes teachers get a large rise each year but thats because the government use that as an incentive to attact more people into teaching.
