Council tax in two homes?

iv got my own home but staying with my partner, and im on both c/tax. what shall i do?

Hi,tell them you have moved back home.

Sell one of them. You don't need two homes do you?

you have to pay both!! Unless your partner is on the lease! put it in your partners name!! whosevers name they will chase you up anyway!! watch out or Scott n company will get you!! Rararararghhahah

Well if you live on your own at your house empty it completely and pay less as an empty house (it must be completely empty) or you could just pay your way on both houses, or get your name removed from your partners house...

why do you have your name on two accounts anyway?

Nothing apart from paying twice.

pay the council tax - why have you still kept your old house if you are staying with partner - why not rent it out?

Most people can only afford 1 house, so if you don't rent it out then pay the tax!

If the council still offers a discount for a second home, then take it.
Short term, empty the house.
Claim any single occupancy discount.

You can claim for a reduction if one of the houses is empty. I'm not sure whether it varies per council - but I did this for my boss a few years back and I think he could claim a reduction for upto 6 months.

If the property is empty and unfurnished then you will qualify for a Class C exemption for 6 months followed by whatever zero occupancy rate you council charges.

If the property is furnished then you will pay whatever your Council's second home discount is.
