If you get a P45 from your jobcenter does the tax code have to be BR?

I assumed the P45 would give me a tax code other then BR? is that right? i started work a weeks ago & on my payslip the tax code was BR, is that normal? as i always assumed by giving P45 you would have a tax code where you dont get taxed as much as the BR code, right?

Take the direct approach..........phone the tax office and quote your new employers PAYE ref number and your NIC number.........tell them you are on a BR code and that you want it changed immediately as this is your one and only job and that you can't afford to be paying more tax than is necessary.
Good luck with your new job.

You stay on BR till you are given a new tax code by the tax office.

This is normal. The tax office always issue a BR tax code until you start work. You will then be issued with a tax code.

Other answerers are only guessing.
The Job Centre are not brilliant at issuing accurate P45's. If you have been given a P45 showing BR by the JC, don't hand it to your new employer. Instead, ask him for a form P46 which you should sign to say this is your only job. Your employer will then put you on 522L which is emergency code and better than BR. Send the P45 from the JC to your tax office (employer will give you the name and address) with a covering letter to say that your only income this year has been from JSA and ask them to issue a cumulative code to your employer. Once they have done this, employer will put you on the right code and refund the tax.
If you have already given the P45 to your employer, ring the tax office (number available from employer) and ask them to issue a proper code to your employer.
Actually, it looks as if you did give the P45 to your employer. You now need to take charge of the situation and get the tax office to issue a proper code. Only you can do this.

Fengirl2 gives good advice. I would add that if the form P45 relates to jobseekers benefit only, no tax will have been deducted, because the jobcentres never deduct tax. Any tax shown thereon would be from a previous job.
