Ive give my P45 to my new employer but still have the BR tax code in my pay slip, why is this?

Unless it takes time processing, by the way my P45 was from my jobcentre cuz ive been signing on for the last 6 years, this does have bearing? but is it true if you give a P45 then you shoudn't have the BR (Basic code) in your pay slip?

This will level itself out in time, any over payments now will be re-payed to you ,

BR is just the initials for your local county or the county in which your company is governed in. Usually Bristol as its where the main Tax office is.

It's just time - give it a month and if it's still there chase it. You'll get the money back don't worry.

BR stands for "Basic Rate", which means you will pay 22% Income Tax on all your earnings. The usual code is 522L, which is also the emergency code, and I would expect that to be on your P45 if it came from the Jobcentre. Contact your payroll office and ask why they are not using the the code and pay and tax details from your P45. Incidentally you should not have been on Code BR, the emergency code, 522L on a week one basis, should have been used.

Sorry, Jessica Calvey is writing a load of rubbish. Your tax code has nothing to do with your location. And while Bristol does have tax offices, it's not the main one.
What was the tax code shown on your P45? Sometimes the Jobcentre doesn't get it right, and shows a BR (Basic Rate) code number. If the P45 showed BR, contact your tax office (name, address, reference, and telephone number can be supplied by employer). Otherwise you will have to take it up with your wages office, that is if it showed the normal single code of 522L, and employer not using it. If you still aren't satisfied, contact the tax office, and they will sort it for you. If you contact tax office, you will need to quote your National Insurance number.
