Why is it difficult to assign an accurate cost for retained earnings?

Retained earnings isn't a cost, it's the difference between your assets, liabilities, and capital stock/paid in capital accounts.

Technically, it should be the accumulation of the earnings/losses of the entity from inception, assuming no dividends or other unusual transactions.
