I think I have got two National Insurance Numbers, my original one appears to have been transposed. Help?

I think that over the years, my National Insurance Number has got muddled up from what it should have been originally, what should I do, as I have used the same number since the Mid 1990s and I now believe that it is incorrect, as I have found out what it was originally. Please advise me if you are able to.

You may have been provided with a temporary NI number, especially if you recently moved into the UK. Alternatively, the IR may have just messed up (as per last night's Watchdog on BBC1)

Go to National Insurance and advise them of the situation, and request assistance. Use the one you were originally issued.

I would advise you to sor this out asap as it could affect your benefit and pension rights. My daughter's last employer pulled afast one and entered one of her relatives' NI number instead of my daughter's and my daughter had an awful time trying to sort it out as the office wallahs accused her of not paying NI or tax for over a year.

Write to the National Insurance Office and ask for your year by year record of contributions, which is information which you are entitled to seek ,on both numbers. Now there may be a problem as they may not want to give you the record on both numbers as they may think they may be giving you information which you are not entitled to so ask for your oldest number first and after you get their reply, write a separate letter for the record of the other. Continue to use the number you have been using. Do not make any change at this time until you have all the facts. Your NI number appears on all your P60's. Check them if you still have them. The NI Office will then decide which number you should continue to use and give you credit for the contributions on the other one. Act immediately.

check it out there may be other things want sorting

this happened to me as well.
i found out when they asked me to pay arrears for 1 number. it got sorted very quickly and did not affect my statutory retirement pension when it became due
