If I stay overnight for work purposes -can I claim this back against my tax?

I am working away from home for 4 nights a week adn am having to stay in a bed and breakfast(costing about 30-40 pounds per night) -can I claim this against my tax?If so how...also can I claim for meals away from home as well?
Many thanks.

How does one claim this? As I am not self employed and my wages are paid direct to me?
Thanks

It sounds as if you are staying in B&B to enable you to be nearer your work. In this case, the cost of the B&B is not deductable for tax.
Only expenses incurred wholly, exclusively and necessarily in the performance of your duties are allowable and this rule is applied very strictly.
If you were having to stay in another town because your employer needed you to work temporarily in that town, that would be deductable, although your employer would be more likely to reimburse you for this.
If you were to make a claim for this expense, the first thing HMRC would want would be a letter from your employer stating that they require you to incur this cost in the performance of your duties - and they would have to explain why they dont reimburse you.

hi, you can claim back any expenses that you incur whilst running a business but remember to keep all receipts and consult a qualified accountant.

i stayed away last week on business for 3 nights and we claimed the hotel cost n all my expenses back

why isn't the company paying for it - that's customary if they are requiring you to work out of town - they should pay for meals and gas/travel costs also

Any expense directly attributable to your work can be claimed against tax, as long as it is business travel and accommodation..

As far as I am aware You would not be able to claim if you have taken a job with a company in another part of the country

You need to ask for a tax return at the end of the year on which you can make your claim. You will need all the receipts as proof.

You may have some trouble but if you keep fighting you will get it. I had a similar situation where although I had a company car I had to pay for all my own fuel. I had to keep a detailed log of every mile as I could only claim for travel to the office if I had gone via a customer.

Because it was unusual that the company did not pay the expense we had to fight with the IR but eventually they gave way. You may well get the same reaction.
