I want to go into web design, but there isn't any demand where I live?

I want to go into Web Design at the college, but I feel so confused. Where I live it's a small city, where it mainly depends on the automative industry. I've been told by people that it would hard to get a job in that field. I love computers, especially dealing with the internet. I was told if I move to a bigger city I'll have a better chance. I can't afford to move to another city, does anyone have any suggestions. Also would it be hard to find a job as a Web Design (since it's competitive).

BE A FREELANCER. You don't need to move or limit yourself to work just within your small city. I am a writer and I write for people all over the world. You can bid on projects on a website such as www.ifreelance.com or www.guru.com or www.elance.com -- you click on "find projects" and you'll see a whole bunch of assignments you can bid on. To take a look at what some other people are doing in your field, click on "find providers" and you can look at other designer's work to see if it's something you can do. Don't think SMALL.... think BIG! You can work in your pajamas and live in your small town forever if you like.

If you have money to go to school in a bigger city, traveling for work shouldn't be much different. IDK your situation fully though.

Hi Mary. Follow your heart - pursue your passion!

First, all fields are competitive (just look at the automotive industry). Capable, motivated, and passionate people are the ones who succeed in ANY competitive field. Those without talent, or who don't develop their skills, and/or lack passion for what they do, are the ones who fail.

Second, Web Design is driven by and for the Internet - you can do it anywhere! That is the beauty and power of the Internet. You can do it for me in Montana, or people anywhere in the world!

Pursue your passion. But, to succeed, you must work hard to excel at it. When you become good at what you do, customers will find you!

Best wishes and good luck.
