How to find an entry-level CAD job?

Hello, I am having a hard time finding a entry-level computer aided drafting job right out of college. I've interviewed with lots of employers, however they prefer the drafter to have 2 to 5 years of experience. I sent lots of resumes and I have been getting responses and interviews but when it comes down to it they want someone who can handle projects under minimal supervision. That's why I rather start low on the totem pole and work my way up. I've been considering changing fields such as computer networking because lots of people in the field say there is a high demand for it. I really don't want to waste what i have learned and wish someone in the engineering drafting industry can give some kind of insight on how to find these hard entry-level and intern drafting jobs out there. I currently live in austin,tx and was wondering if I should look beyond Texas.

Thanks

Hi Cedric,

About 12 years ago I was in a similar situation to you. I had just graduated and couldn't find a job.

The way I got around this was to approach a local company (who weren't even recruiting at the time) and offered to work for free. I thought of it as gaining work experience / training for free.

At the time I was still living with my parents and I didn't have a family to support, so I managed to get by.

In this role, I was initially given small low risk / tedious jobs that the other engineers didn't really want to do. But at the same time I gained valuable hands-on experience and access to latest CAD software. It also got my foot on the ladder and gave me an opportunity to prove my ability to them.

About 2 months after I was offered a permanent position as a junior design draughtsman. The salary wasn't fantastic at first but not long after it climbed quickly as I was promoted.

Good luck & I hope you find something soon :-)
