Can I amend my tax return and get more money? |
I filed my taxes way back in February and received my rebate shortly thereafter. However in March I got my1098-T in the mail for the tutition I paid early in 2007 and had completely forgotten about. It was only for about $900. Can I do something about this and claim this as a deduction and get whatever money extra that I would hae gotten back. I'm sure its only like $50, but hey $50 is $50. Yeah you can amend your return with form 1040-X, and you should be able to claim a lifetime learning credit for 20% of the $900. So, $180 back. You can amend your return. To do so, file a paper Form 1040X (this cannot be filed electronically, but you can download the blank form from http://www.irs.gov). Sure, file an amended return on form 1040X and claim the education credit if you qualify for it - you'll get the additional refund. You can certainly file an amended return via IRS form 1040X. Believe it or not, you can actually go back up to 3 years and file returns seeking additional money back. Yes,amend your 1040 and the IRS will send you your check! |
