What to do if my accountant has gone missing ?

I dropped the ball on my taxes, as I had a child, changed jobs, and moved to a new country.

In the midst of the chaos I went to an accountant and gave him all my income papers for 2 years worth of taxes.
The problem being that I cannot find him anymore. He is unreachable by phone, and can't find an address for him. He dropped off the face of the earth... and took my income documents :)

What do I do ? There was quite a bit of paperwork from ex-employers, and tracking this paperwork down again seems like quite a chore... especially since I'm overseas.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I can't tell if this is a USA question and will presume it is.

What kind of accountant? CPA--required to be registered with the state. Enrolled Agent--licensed by Treasury Dept, often a member of National Assn of EAs. Ordinary Tax Preparer? May be licensed by state, they are in California
Fly by Night Tax Service? Flew by night.

Reconstructing most of your records shouldn't be to hard for a stateside tax practitioner. If you want some information off the forum, email me through my profile. I am an enrolled agent who specializes in taxpayers with messes.

I can't help you now, but next time, just give him copies, keep the originals. Good luck, I hope someone can help you.

If it is wage information (w-2) and 1099 information you need call IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and they will send them to you for free. But for your personal records, you won't be able to retrieve that information.
IRS will mail them to you and you should receive them in 7-10 days from the date you made the request.

Good Luck!

I would strongly suggest you perform a reverse phone lookup on http://reversecellphonesearcher.com

It allows you to search for people's address, contact information and even household members just by their phone number.

There's a small fee attached with this service but you only pay for the records you want... and even those are guaranteed!

Hope it helps and good luck with getting your papers back :-)
