Is sponsoring an event tax deductible?

Is sponsoring an event tax deductible?

If the event is intended to generate income, the expenses you incur in sponsoring the event are tax deductible. That is, you can deduct the expenses from the revenues to arrive at net income or a net loss.

The IRS may view your sponsorship of the event as a hobby. In that case you can deduct expenses only to the extent of revenue. In other words, you can pay the tax on the income, but you cannot deduct the loss. To avoid having your sponsorship viewed as a hobby, you should report the activity on Schedule C and show that it is intended as a business venture.

You may also mean sponsoring an event by donating money to whoever is organizing it. In that case, the donation is tax deductible if the event is put on by a qualified charity. This could be a school or church, a charitable foundation or other organization designated by the IRS as a qualified charitable organization. For example, sponsoring a race car for the Indianapolis 500 race is not tax deductible, but if you are a corporation doing the sponsoring, you could consider the expense as promotion and advertising, and deduct it as an operating expense.
