VAT for imported Laptop from USA?

Hi everyone,

I've considering buying an laptop from USA but I'm not sure about the duties and VAT on it. So I'd appreciate if anyone could help me figure out the percentages or values of those taxes. Besides does anyone know if VAT and duties are added on used laptops?

Thanks in advance

hi there,

If you were to travel to the States and buy the laptop there and bring it home with you, you would not have to pay a thing, since you could argue that you already had it before you left.

If you are thinking of buying it online (e.g. ebay), then there are many options available to you. As an ebayer myself having bought stuff from the States, I know that if the seller is willing to put a $45 value on the customs' declaration, then the item is USUALLY not liable for VAT or any other tax.

In addition, sometimes marking the item shipped as a GIFT also has the same effect. But, be aware that both methods do not guarantee you tax amnesty. These are just tried methods that have worked in the past.

Having had a quick look at HMRC's website, I can see that laptops are free of standard duty rate, but are liable to standard VAT at 17.5%. Here's the link FYI:

No VAT is charged in the US, and since I don't know what country you are in, I can't tell you if there would be any VAT issues for you in your country.
