On Becoming a Fashion Designer...?

I currently live in Germany. I was in the military and I got out but my husband is still in until the end of this year. When we move back home to Texas I will be attending Texas Women's University for a degree in fashion design. During this time I will be working on small lines to sell on Etsy.com. Just to put my self out there and for the love of design. After college I will be looking for a job in the industry while working on my own line. I am hoping to sell to boutiques and do trade shows and fashion shows while working etc. It is not my dream to become a FAMOUS fashion designer. I just want to become a designer and be able to make a decent living. I know fashion design it is VERY hard work and its not as glamours as people think it is. I am not in it for the glamour I truly just love to design. I have been reading up on fashion design, sewing, sketching and the business aspects of doing your own line. I was wondering if my plan for the future sounds like a good plan so far?

Wow, this sounds like my life! I lived in Germany after we got out of the military, I went back to school for fashion design. And I am now a fashion designer with my own bridal line.

You are doing the right thing. Start drafting your business plan little by little. Read the book "Fashion Designer Survival Guide", it will give you a valuable insight on how to run a fashion business.

You are right by saying it is not as glamorous as people think. I have not had a day off since I started but because it takes awhile before a business takes off. Getting a loan for a design business is also harder than you think. Investors do not care if your designs are awesome, they only care about the ROI.

Because there are a lot of designers competing for business, you must concentrate on defining yourself and establishing your niche. What makes your designs different? Why would people buy from you, instead of your competitor?

As long as you work hard, you will achieve anything you put your heart into. Good luck! And welcome to the world of wacky world of fashion design :)

Yea i think that it sounds great!!!!! Just follow you heart and do what you think that is right! The better that you are making designs the more money you will make. So far i think that you have a good head on your shoulders!!!!
Good Luck =)

Thats the best idea of fashion I ever heard! My friend wants to be one too but she never had an idea like this. Maybe you can make me clothes, haha!
