How successful will I be? |
I want to start an electrical contracting business in Adelaide, but how much work would I get straight off? If I advertise in the local bragg, would I go well? What should I do? Planning and marketing are everything during your first quarter. I don't know where Adelaide is so some of what I say might need to be adapted for your area. Planning-- Find out who your competition is. Only look at the competitors that do the work you are intending to do. How much do they make? You can get that info from census data trade mag's etc. Set your budget with the expectation that you will get about 3% during the first Q. You can't work until those that might use your services know you exist so you need to promote yourself. I assume you will be hired by general contractors. Send a letter to all of them that have the kind of work you are looking for. Point out what's unique about your service, like avaliable weekends or evenings. I usually tell people to expect to spend 125% of the competition on advertising and promotion during the first year. Join a service club and show that you want to give back to the community as well as work within the community. Send out a second letter telling the contractors you will be coming the their sites to introduce yourself. Then go there dressed to work and shake their hands and give them a card. Do your best work every time you get a job and make sure it's better than your competition. If your competition leaves the job site without cleaning up you don't. When someone calls you and their in a jam you get them out of it. Make sure your phone is answered. If you do these things and you do a good job your business will grow. When you start a business... you have to expect a couple of hard years. Every business has to expect that. If you aren't hitting it big in the first year (like everyone would hope), don't get discouraged. You have to show determination. And until then you will be succesful. Well you need to know how to run a business and be a good sales person, as well as having good sales methods and being able to manage the businesses money. put it on craigslist and kijiji. also most big companies deal mostly with businesses, see if there is a b2b orginzation in your area. |
