Renters insurance...?

Does anybody know if... in the state of Alabama, if home renters insurance is mandatory? Are we required by law, to have renters insurance, before renting-to-own a home? Can the landlord legally force us to get renters insurance?
I've already considered asking a lawyer, but thought I would give Yahoo Answers a try first.
Thank you sincerely... Moonpie

LOVE your name!
I provided a website below with Alabama statues regarding landlord tenants regulations. I did not read anything about the state requiring renters insurance, but keep in mind that some landlords require renters insurance as a provision of their lease. If you sign the lease then you must obtain it.
There is also a site for your states attorney generals office that is free to you and where you can go if you have problems.
Hope they help!

I dont know if it is mandatory, or not, but I highly recommend it ! If the house burns down ( which mine did ), how will you replace your stuff ? I'm not a fancy dresser, and to replace just my clothing articles was about $ 1500.00 ; not to mention the stereo, tv, sofa, all kitchen ware, beds, dressers, and all furniture ! Approx. $ 12,000.00 !!! In my case , almost 6 mos. salary !

If you're a renter - no. If you're a property owner who rents the property - the mortgage lender will require it. And even then the property owner is not going to insure your contents. Renters insurance is so inexpensive and well worth it if the upstairs unit's washer line breaks and floods your bedroom closet. You use your own renters for immediate relief and your carrier will subrogate against the "at fault" party usually.

I do not believe it is any sort of state law that renter's insurance must be procured, but any seller/landlord is well within his/her rights to make such insurance a part of the agreement into which you may enter.

If the insurance is part of the contract you sign, you will find yourself in default of the contract if you fail to maintain the required insurance. That's akin to not making payments as agreed.

Pay attention to Sweetdaddy. I also think that rent to own would be a little different than just renting and you could be required to carry renter's insurance, if not home owners.

If you moved in with someone and you are not on the lease the landlord has every right to raise the rent. They do that because of the extra wear and tear and extra on utilities that they pay.
