Do You Live In A Townhouse? How Do You Like It?

I'm looking for a new home. I have HAD IT with living in an appartment. It's rough finding an affordable single family home near the beach. There are so man townhouses available. If I hate appartments, do you think I will a hate a townhouse just as much?

Thank you in advance

The difference between an apartment and a townhouse is that in a TH you don't have a LL to deal with because you own it. You have a say about what goes on in the neighborhood because you have the right to sit on the board of the HOA. You can decorate as you like, make changes, upgrade and never worry about having to change it back when you move. You are no longer throwing your money away renting to a landlord and the equity you get out of the place is yours, when you sell you walk away with money in your pocket and a lot more than you'd be able to save on your own, when I sold my condo I walked away with over $100K which afforded me the luxury of putting in some nice upgrades when I bought pre construction.

Now the draw backs can be noisey neighbors, no privacy, difficulty parking, loud stereos etc. I chose this complex because they were preconstruction and they were built with double insulated sound batts between party walls. Now, I can hear my neighbor walking around upstairs and I can hear people in the hallways, I cannot however, hear if my neighbors have a party unless I walk out in the hallway, otherwise I have been fortunate to not hear anyone. I like this over owning a home because I don't have to maintain the landscaping outside or deal with roof issues etc. It works for me as I'm single. The only way to know what a place is like is drive the complex on the weekend, see what kind of neighbors you will have, then walk the place again at night, see what kind of noises you hear, do you hear stereo's a lot of noisy children, barking dogs etc? The one thing about my complex is I've walked it at night with my dog and I don't hear a thing, it's dead quiet.

I eventually want a house, but i'm reluctant to take on all the head aches of owning a home.

Probably depends on what unit you get. I was in a townhouse that had two stories and a basement, and was the end unit, so it only had a townhouse on one side of it. Didn't notice nearly as much neighbor-noise as in an apartment.

depends, just like an apartment, you share a common wall, good neighbors make it a good experience, bad ones a bad experience, have had great neighbors move and rent to some one who didnt know there was a limit to base, and the walls vibrated, to the point my wife called the cops, lol, even if u own which we did, it can be unpleasant, u have to love homeowner associations which tell you how to landscape, what color to paint, when to turn on the outside lights, and when u can put garbage out. opps you neighbor just started a fire and ur place went up too. happens, research what u are planning to get into, read the bylaws and homeowners association rules, talk with the neighbors and ask their opinion about living in the complex, proceed caustiously it cna be a great experience or the worse one of your life

My wife and I went from an appartment, which we hated, to a townhouse. The difference is like night and day. Although, even in townhouses there are some differences. We have our own, attached, 2 car garage. We do not have anyone behind us and trees block all views from our neighbors in the front. Since it is a townhouse we do have a common wall on both sides but we are very lucky to have quiet older couples in the homes. Actually I think we are the occcasional loud ones. We remodeled the entire interior and we may plan to stay there forever. Do your research.

If you don't like pat living, be careful; about townhouses. they can still be noisy!!!! I have never lived in an apt, always a house, wall are too thin in apt's, I live in a house in the mtn's, also watch the neighborhood, you would be wise to take a walk, through any prospective one, listen for dog barking, you would not believe what we go thru, I have had to call cop's and animal control, and nothing has changed, it is truly awful, we are fixing our home up selling it and try to find a home in at least an acre or more,, good luck

Townhouse, or duplex.....? They are very similar. Water front property up here$$$$$$

I have a townhouse...really. Three floors of townhouse.....
Finished basement...quite big actually.
main floor......kitchen, bathroom, parlor
top floor..... 2 bedroom, big office, washroom

I don't know about posters who already owned townhouses here. Really.....!!!!!
I have a big yard, 30 ft swimming pool..... I jam music downstairs with my friends,,,,,2 guitars, bass, drum......never heard my next door complaining.

I have to agree that I am only attached to a similar townhouse next door. Maybe the townhouse they are referring too are all hooked up in serie. Whatever.
Beats an apartment any time. More breathing room...it's your own home.
By the way, my house is sitting on a 5,000 sq.foot lot. That's the space for all homes.

Low maintenance and because of the 3 storey, heat doesn't escape as much in winter as other homes.

Please don't get away too far (grin)
