Do I need to be a Virginia resident to buy a house?

I just moved from Delaware to Virginia to take a new job, and I am interested in buying a house in the near future. Do I need to change to VA residency? What are the benefits to changing residency? Thanks.

You do not need to be a resident to buy a house. However, you need to establish residency after you move. Residency determines state taxes, voting privileges, driver's license, etc.

Any American can buy a house in any state without being a resident of that state. In some states a resident may be able to get a homestead exemption for property taxes. Some states have no state income tax so establishing residency there can be beneficial. To vote in a state, you have to be a resident.

You can buy any house in the USA you can afford to pay for.

You have to change your residency, whether you buy a house or not. Your drivers license and insurance must be changed to your new state.
