I am tentatively exploring the possibility of moving to Portland, Oregon ...?

I am interested in living in the city and would like to know where the nicest area are in which to find an apartment and which areas to avoid.

Also: I am gay and would be interested to know which areas are friendly in that respect.

I'd like to live in a nice-ish quiet-ish friendly area with very easy access to the town center/shopping/cafes/nightlife etc

Iv lived in Portland my entire life, and honeslty, I believe there's no beter location in the world! Two hours away in any direction from Portland and you have beautiful new scenery. You have the gorgeous coast to the west, amazing mt hood to the east, praire and farm land south.

As for where in Portland to live, the Pearl in northwest is breathtaking. It's right next to downtown for the nightlife part, very gay friendly (and btw Embers is a great club to hit in downtown Ptown). Although the Pearl is a little spendy. I live in Northeast Portland, and I love my neighborhood. Id stay out of southeast and out of north portland. But delfinitly look up places in northeast and in northwest.

You can get anywhere in the city within a half-hour. I know. I had a job for a while that required me to do just that.

    ah, why don't you go and get a real job. That is so weak. If you must, look up political action groups. They typically use petitioners. Many of them are just hired thru temp agency.
