What to do when you change jobs and there is no 401k and you have 401k account from previous job? Roll it into an IRA at a brokerage or Vanguard or Fidelity. You can leave it where it is if it is enough but rolling it over gives you more control. Rolling it to a new 401K isn't usually a good idea since fees are high in 401K plans. Move it to a place like your bank or a major investment house like Fidelity or you can leave it at your old job...whatever you do DONT TAKE ANY OUT. The investment firm that manages your 401k can recommend a group account that you can join to keep the 401k intact. You can roll it into a self-directed IRA or you can leave it where it is. I currently have two 401K's. One with my previously employer and one with my current employer. I have more investment choices because of it. |
