Can the bank cancel your account if its overdrawn for too long?

Lets say for a month?

Yes. They did that to me when I had an overdraft at my account and I didn't have the money to pay it back within 30 days. When you have the money, just pay them back, and try to open up another account with them, or you can go to another bank. Be careful though, some banks report overdrafts to chexsystems.

Yep. You still owe the shortage, though.

They can, but why would they? Leaving it open compounds the penalties you will owe them. They will keep it open and hound you for the money and then even more money. I suggest you pay up.

Yes they can. A bank can close your account at anytime for any reason. Although most banks wait anywhere between 45 and 60 days on an overdraft account they are not required to wait at all. If the customer continues to use the account knowing fully well that it is overdrawn then they can close it and send it for collection at anytime. The overdrawn customer is still responsible for any paid items plus all the overdraft fees assessed to the date the account was closed.

yes they do. i had this done when i didn't have the money to pay off the overdrawn amount. i set up a payment plan w/the bank to pay back my debt. they did report it to chexsystems too.

They could do but then they would have lost a customer - they'd rather use up the Amazon rainforest in sending you letters (at least first) lol.

The worst thing you can do is poor communication. If you are experiencing difficulties, go in and explain them. They'd rather work something out with you than not get any money at all.

If you need a clean credit record (e.g. for phone companies who use this, mortgage etc), then one needs to fix this problem ASAP (e.g. go onto a low monthly repayment scheme).
