What happens if? |
you do payroll for a small company and you reported and got paid more then you actually worked You will inevitably be caught, fired, and charged with embezzlement. Since this is your first offence and I'm guessing the amount in question is not even all that significant, you will get 2 months in jail, but be let out after 1 on parole with community service and a Grand Theft felony on your record. You should go to payroll immediately and get the problem fixed. If the mistake is caught in an accounting audit, and it is determined you are at fault in knowingly keeping the extra money, you could be charged with theft and would be liable not only for paying back the difference but also interest and legal costs. And if the labor board gets involved, the company could also be fined. It's a lot better if these things are voluntarily corrected. I would suggest you let the business owner know that you made an error and caught it and do the appropriate entries to correct the problem and write a check back to the small company along with the correct journal entries. |
