Does anyone know where I can find a public defender or someone that would take a case Pro-bono?

I really need to find a public defender or someone who would take the case Pro-bono. We can't afford a lawyer and need someone that deals with family court. Also, we need to have detective work provided and to obtain acess to records that we wouldn't be able to get but a public defender would. It's very important that we get a public defender as soon as possible. Again, anyone that knows of a website or how to go about locating a public defender would be greatly appreciated.

There exists non-profit agencies that take on such matters, depending on merit of the case.

Another is to inquire at law schools. Be bold and enterprising and request an information interview with one of the department heads and professors, who in turn may listen to your circumstance and then prescribe -- or -- propose for you the services of a third-year law student to take on the case for his or her scholarship at the law school, perhaps as part of his or her thesis, which can prove to be a win-win situation for you and the student.

It would have helped if you had listed what city you're in . But look in the white pages of your phone book and see if you have a Legal Aid in your city. These folks go by your income or situation.
