How did you decide on your career/major? happy? |
I'm currently a freshman at CUNY and wanted to know other people's experience at choosing their career path, Well, I didn't really chose my career path, I just sort of fell into it. When I entered college, I majored in biology because I wanted to become a dentist and then endodontist. Well, I found out that science just wasn't my thing. I tried very very hard, but the grades just weren't there. I then decided to major in interior design and architecture, where I took drafting and art classes. Again, not my thing. Meanwhile, I took some electives in sociology, which I throughly enjoyed. I then decided to become a fashion merchandising major, but didn't care for it too much, I didn't feel creative enough. There were a few more majors that followed after that. After taking about 6 sociology classes, I decided that I would just major in sociology. I then began taking some Ethnic Studies courses, which I really enjoyed. So, I ended up with a minor in Ethnic Studies. After I graduated I had difficulity finding a job, my aunt worked as a social worker and told me that they were hiring at her job. I ended up working in a residential treatment facility with troubled youth, I worked for that organization for about 4 years before leaving to work at another residential treatment facility, where I am curently working. I have in recent years seen a career advisor and the one thing that I wish I would have done would have been to seek the assistant of a career counselor while I was at school. I would have avoided all of the nonsense and switching that I did while there. At the time I was just trying things that I thought that I would like. I learned so much more about myself after I graduated and worked with a career counselor. If I could do it all over again, I would have had a different major, something that was more specialized and not so broad.Broad can be good, but sometimes it leaves out things that can be useful in other areas. Some majors just work better in conjunction with other things, such as graduate school. Overall, I think that it was best for me at the time, however, if I could do things all ove again I would have chosen a different major and doubled with Sociology or just would have used it as a minor. My interest have changed over the years and I'm headed into something very different from the study of social sciences. I can't say that I'm not happy, but I can't say that I am. I am in the process of applying to graduate school, but I think that I'm going to face a challenge in that I don't have the undergraduate background in the new field that I am pursing, so I think that I'll most likely have to take some undergraduate courses/ prerequisites in order to get into the program that I want to.The best thing that I would advise to anyone who is unsure or having difficulty deciding on a major would be to see a career counserlor, access your strengths and weakness, abilities in certain areas and your likes and dislikes. Personality test are also extremely helpful because there are certain careers that certain people do well with and are happy with because they have the right temperment for it. I hope that this answers your question. Good luck to you in all that you do. It was hard long road for me. thought all my life I wanted to be a doctor. I did well in high school in physics, chemistry etc. I got to college and it was a hole new ball game. I won't bore you with the details but it was not for me. I thought about Sociology but I was told no by several family members because there are no job opportunities for that major. I took a year off and did some soul searching and decided to major in Social Work and concentrate on the elderly. I did and I love my job and I am really happy with it. I would say look at your major and think about the job opportunities with that major. Things like psychology and philosophy are useless with just a BA you need to get your PHD do something |
