How to land a job at the library? |
I really want to work at the local library during my summer. The hours are fantastic and it seems like a fun/safe atmosphere to work in. It would be my first job, and It's really the only place that I really want to work at. I spent the last 8 years in library work. I think that it is a wonderful place to work IF you are truly sincere about librarianship ( I don't just mean the reference people by librarianship I mean everyone who works there). It can be demanding and challenging even for page staff (people who shelve books). Please understand that just because there are books and an overall atmosphere for learning it isn't a fun (or always safe) environment to work in. After all libraries are busy places that are open to EVERYONE in the public. That being said- just because your friend seems to have connections is NO guarantee for employment (people tried to shmooze us all the time, we don't like it even if we like the person). My advice to you is to prepare a very nice cover letter expressing your interest in working in the library. Highlight any volunteer, clubs or other organizations in your school or community that you are involved in. Have a teacher or club moderator write letters of recommendation for you. Have a parent or teacher proof read it. DO NOT tell this "friend" when you are going. When you go, dress nicely. Smile, introduce yourself to anyone who assists you!!!! Ask for an application. Fill out an application and turn it in with your letters. Do not be discouraged if you don't get the job. I didn't get the first job I wanted when I was your age (which was at a library!). Libraries are competitive places. Keep trying and no matter what the out come, use the experience to grow for the next time. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU! If you can offer to do some volunteer work there - unpaid of course. Show them that you are able to do the job and are really keen to learn. That will set you way above your 'friend' and make a fantastic impression. Try and make sure your personal profile is good, be a team player and a good all rounder. Step one: Apply for the job. |
