I went to massage school thinking it would be a great way to make money fast. One of the first things I learned is that the average massage therapist (that was about 3 or 4 years ago) makes about $ 26,000 per year. I've finished massage school because what I learned completely changed my life, but I definitely will not be giving up my daytime job to switch to massage. You are looking at a hefty initial investment (school fees, books, massage table, linens, lotions) and no guarantee that you'll ever get it back. From what I've learned, a large number of MT's leave the profession after a few years, either because they couldn't make it in a private practice or because of burnout and other issues. Think - how many people feel they deserve one massage a year? One a month? One a week? Building up a loyal, regular clientele takes a lot of work. If you work for a day spa or a chiropractor's office, you earn less money but probably have some kind of guaranteed income. Probably the most promising avenue would be to complete the basic massage school requirement (I believe it is at least 650 hours now) and then specialize in a popular modality, or get into a specialized field which ties in with medical application, like lymph drainage massage. Call different massage schools in your area for more information. Good luck!

Of course they Can

If they are good and look like they know what they are doing

My sister is a massage therapist she makes pretty good money she makes $25 dollars a message and has about 10 clients a day so she makes $250 a day and it's really good money she had to go to school for 4 years and took a national boards to become a certified massage therapist if you dont take boards then you can only work for free. This is a great job to do out of the home and still have time with your family hope all of this information helped you.

They definitely can. If you do it by yourself, it can be hard to get and keep clients, but if you start out at a spa or something, I heard you can make a lot of money. Someone from my hometown (its small small small) makes like $50 an hour on her own/ out of her home. But I have a friend who would not try to work in a business and has not found any clients of her own that is now waitressing. So if you do a little market research in your area you may find out that its a good thing to get into!
Good luck!

Also, we have programs here in Maine, and I'm sure there are some nationally that only take 1 year to complete for massage therapy.

I would also suggest looking into becoming a medical transcriptionist... you can end up working from home like my aunt!

Yes, you can make good money. talk to the schools about what types of jobs are available in your area, and what they pay. I found being a massage therapist a very rewarding career, but be careful. My wrists hurt alot from not following proper body mechanics. Also, use massage therapy as a step to where you want to go. It isn't the kind of work you can take for more than 10 years. You may be better off becoming a physical therapist assistant, or an estitician.

That depends on your definition of "good". It also depends on how saturated the market is, whether you're going to work for yourself and if so, how effective your small business and advertising skills are. The schooling doesn't take a long time, it's 2 years or less.
My friend was a medical assistant which is a more reliable source of steady income and takes a year or two for the degree.

Do you want to work for 40 years or more to make $40,000 a year or less just so you can retire on 40% of what wasn't enough in the first place?
