How to explain gaps in your work history..?

Without telling all of your business. The gap is not due to a vacation or pregnancy, but not quite jail. The person is in their early twenties, went to college some, but did not graduate and needs a fresh start.

The question is not about me and the person is asked about it all the time.

1st, if the jobs you're listing weren't even significant you can leave them out. 2nd, say you were in some sort of school. Or an answer that does not invite questions, is saying there was some sort of family issue.

I never explain gaps on applications...I just fill out what experience I have and leave it at that.

They don't have to. Just leave it off their resume unless specifically asked. If they do ask, all they have to tell them is that they were dealing with some personal issues, but that they're all settled now. (Assuming of course that they are.)

However, if it was something where they were working off a sentence for a crime, admit it up front and tell them that it was youthful stupidity, because if they're serious about hiring the person, the company will run a criminal records check and find out.
