Ok ive had this problem for a long time.?

i go to apply for jobs. i put everything down truthfully and i dont get called backs! and they have signs in front of their window saying "now hiring". wat am i doin wrong?? i never had a job before too except work at a family business. and ive applied at all places. like kmart, walmart, etc. please help.

As a hiring manager, I can tell you right away that there are certain things a manager is looking for when hiring entry level help. Some of these things are negative and may be working against you. Others are positive traits that you might not have and need to develop before getting a job. Some key points the manager is looking at on your application include. . .

1) Age - you may not be old enough. Many places only want 18 or older
2) High School diploma or GED - if you don't have it, GET IT!
3) Lack of experience - you may lose out to someone who has run a register before or has had sales experience
4) Poor work history- many jobs that have lasted only a month or two will lead a hiring manager to question whether they want to invest the time and energy training you. Also, unexplained gaps in employment - particularly if you are not in school. They will question why you were not working.
5) Conviction of a crime - doesn't necessarily keep you from being eligible but you may lose out to someone with same qualifications that hasn't been convicted of a crime.
6) Pay expectation - some applications ask how much you expect to be paid. You may be putting down an amount more than the job pays.

But I will tell you probably the number one reason why entry level applicants do or don't get called for an interview. . . it's availability. Managers want someone whose schedule is as flexible as possible and most places (retail and fast food) need help in the evening and on the weekends. I'm always shocked at how applicants don't get this! If you are limiting your availability because you don't want to work Friday nights or anytime over the weekend - you can forget about getting an interview.

Some other hints - make sure that your application is filled out COMPLETELY - no gaps. Write neatly, not like a psychopath! ha ha Make sure you double check your spelling - it shows an attention to detail. If you don't have much work experience, try to include anything that might show you have the needed skills to do the job - volunteer experience, school extra curriculars, etc. I have no problem hiring kids for their first job but I'd like to see that they are social and participate in sports, clubs, band, etc. Something besides watching t.v. all day. Finally, if you want your application to move to the top of the pile, ask someone to help you put together a brief resume on the computer. It will show you are serious and may give you an opportunity to highlight some things in your self that didn't have a place on the regular job application. If you don't think you have enough work experience to put together a good resume, ask a teacher, coach, pastor, or other adult (not family) to write you a brief letter of recommendation. Submit a copy with your application and you're sure to get a second look and probably an interview.

Hope this helps.

don't waite for them to call you need to follow through and let them know you are interested and committed to work for them. Initiative Go in set up an interview. Call and see how your application is doing

Employers want people with great work ethic and genuinely want to work there. You might be over qualified and they feel that you will be quickly bored and quit. Find a position that you want for the long run, that you will enjoy. Then go after that job with a vengeance. You need to call HR at least once a week and let them know you are still interested. Be very upfront, optimistic and professional. Employers want you to dress for the job. You represent the company in front of the public so multicolored hair, noticeable piercings or baggy pants that hang to your knees are probably going to be a turn off. Dress like you are going to church for the interview. You need to show that you are the best person for that job. You will be to work on time and do your best. Employers also want someone that will fit in with the rest of company. In a way it is a lot like dating. Sometimes you are just not what they are looking for. Good Luck though and keep on trying. It will happen.
