How can I ask my interviewer how I measure up compared to other candidates?

Can I ask him if there is anything I can do to make myself a stronger candidate?

Absolutely. I have always concluded the interview with "How did I do?" If they say "Great!", it means you are on the short list of candidates. If they say "Fine", then your odds are not as good.

I would NOT ask "Is there anything I can do..." question, at least not right after the interview. It would probably be OK if you get a second interview, but I would rephrase it. Perhaps something like "I want to be the top candidate. Do you think there anything else that I can provide you to ensure I am your first choice?"

Good Luck.

I don't mind when someone asks me that question - I try to give them as much helpful advice as I can. Be sure to have someone in your line of work review your resume and your cover letter for additional tips. And it doesn't hurt to video tape yourself doing a 'fake' interview. Have a friend help you. It will give you good practice for future interviews!
