Question about work experience?

Why is it that every where I go to look for work they are only seeking experienced people? I have had a job before but it was off the books so that won't count. I have been having this problem since I was 17. When I was 13-16 I always applied for summer youth but my brother wound up getting called once and other than that none of us got called. I am currently in college right now and i need a way to pay for my books and other supplies. I do get financial aid and a book voucher but the voucher is only for 250 and books in college are very expensive and the voucher never covers it all. I just want to know why they always say if you don't have experience then I won't hire you? How can I ever get experience if I need experience to get a job? Hope someone can answer this and give some possible advice on what I can do.

I've actually never told them about my off record experience. Actually I did once but the guy told me it doesn't count so i never said it again. I always say i'm willing to learn but it always seems like no one is willing to teach. they always say give me your name and number and we'll call you if anything. I have yet to be called by anyone. thanks for the advice though.

I know exactly what you mean. Since you're still in college, try to find a paid internship in your field of study. All of them don't require previous experience and some of them pay very nicely. (I currently make $12/hr at mine). Plus, it will look good on your resume once you start looking for a full-time position b/c you'll have some related experience.

I'm not sure how big your school is, but most colleges have some type of placement services for students looking for part-time jobs. They help students find employment at locations both on and off campus. Our student employment services office posts jobs online so that we can look at them anytime.

make something up---you know you have lots of knowledge about lots of things and your probably a quick learner

can u try to explain your situation, saying that you've had experience but it isn't in the records and tell them why you need a job. You also might say your willing to learn.
