Relocate to chicago - no job, never been there. Is this smart?

I have graduated college in May, have AA in Journalism and BA in Communications. Want to work as a paralegal, lol. Currently having REALLY hard time finding work in the NYC area. should I relocate to Chicago?? how hard is it to find work there and how quickly could I get a place, job, etc. I'm a single female, 26....want to get rid of my car and rely on pub. transport. Everyone keeps telling me, i'm young so do it and I will adjust when I get there - how smart of a move is this?

** i'm just trying to find a place for myself after getting a degree :(

I lived in Chicago for all of 6 months, very expensive living there and I too was relying on public transportation. I have friends who live there, so I was staying with one of them which helped out a lot. I had two jobs there, I quit one to take the other but it didn't work out, so I moved back to Saint Louis. I would suggest you visit Chicago for about a week and see if you woud like living there.

I grew up in Chicago left at age 24 and although I've been back to visit/births/deaths/weddings etc. I cannot envision myself relocating there. I now live in SF Ca area and believe it would be stupid to leave here now that I am retired and can afford to live here.

I had several reasons for leaving Chicago, principal among which was the specific work I wought that was not trhen nor is now available there. Your chosen field is probably open to any major metropolitan area in USA so select carefully ! A trade organization can make you aware of job opportuities in various cities so study it closely before deciding !

I think it's a little foolish to relocate to a city you have never visited without having a job lined up. You should visit the city first and see if it's somewhere that you can actually see yourself living. Chicago's a great city but it's not for everyone--- I could never live there but I love to visit. If you have a job lined up, it's only marginally better to move to a city you've never seen before.
