Can someone tell me about having a career as a Wildlife Biologist?

I'm only in high school now, but will soon be heading to college. I've always wanted to pursue a career with animals and have taken wildlife management and animal sciences on the high school level. Initially I wanted to be a vet and may still go down that road if I cannot find anything else, but I don't think a medical career and me spending that long in school in a competitive job is the right thing for me. My parents think so because of the money involved after so many years being a vet- and money is an important factor, but I don't want to spend my life doing something that stressful that I only half enjoy.

Then I looked at Wildlife Biology and thought it would be a good career for me. Aside from my own research I will be doing, I would like to know about wildlife biology from those who know about it or are a biologist themselves.

What jobs can I get as a Wildlife Biologist?
Do you have an idea of the salary?

I don't know about the work itself, but the education you will need will be equal to that of being a veterinarian. You will need your PhD in both cases. I would also imagine if you were doing field research as a biologist you'll be spending half of your time chasing down grants to do the research -- you need grants to fund your research and pay yourself. So, if money is something you're worried about, this may not be the path for you.

Have you thought about working at a zoo? You could get your veterinary degree and work with exotic animals at a zoo. It would be a little more exciting than spending your day looking down cats and dogs throats.
