Should I inform my Employer that I am looking for a new job??

I took a position in Aug. of this year in a new city, kept my apartment in my old city (only an hour away). I graduated from college in Dec. (with a degree unrelated to my job I have currently) and now i want to move back to my old city and do something other than what I am doing now.

Me and my boss get along okay but I just don't like what I am doing and I really want to move back. Should I tell him that I am in the process of looking for another job??? OR should I just wait until I have found a new position and put in a 2 week notice?

Personally if I was you I would wait, and then hand it my notice when I have secured a new position.

If you tell your boss now that you are leaving he may start pressing you for the date you are leaving etc, which will be difficult for you as you have not yet secured a new position.

Some companies have quite a long recruitment process and if he knows you are looking elsewhere he may start constantly asking you if you have found anything else yet, which could be a bit embarassing on your part to have to say no, or even worse, that could make you feel rushed to find something new, and you could end up accepting a job you are not 100% sure about, just to get the boss off your back.

If your contract only requires you to give two weeks notice then I personally think that is all you should give.

Take your time, and find something that is totally right for you before you go, and good luck in finding your new position for 2008!! =]

WAIT!! Put in your 2 week notice when you're ready. If you tell him now, you face the chance of being fired before you're ready to leave. 2 weeks is plenty of time for him to find and train a new person.

That is up to you. Personally, I'm in the same position and I am not telling my boss I am looking. I am also putting on my applications that they cannot contact my boss. I would like to keep my job of another company doesn't hire me..so I choose to remain silent about it. I will give him 2 weeks notice if I get hired somewhere else. Beyond that, I feel he doesn't need to know anything.

Don't tell your current boss. Wait until you have something new lined up. It would be a shame if your boss found your replacement before you find a new position.

tell him and I would not be surprised at all if he let you go immediately. go by etiquette and give him a 2 week notice only.

No,

Just give them a two week notice once you find your new job.

Your boss may be nice; however, business is business. They will probably fire you if they know you're looking for a job.

Wait, and give him the 2 weeks notice. That's all you are entitled to do. He is not your friend, business is business.

Act in your own best interest - yet remain professional. That is, write a well planned farewell letter and forgo any negative comments on your exit interview. Leave with a positive or neutral attitude.

It is best to notify your employer of your leave once you have a job offer confirmed from elsewhere.

Notify your employer within the time frame required for your position (whether 2 weeks or a month). Anything beyond that is not beneficial to anyone and anything less than that is just unprofessional.
