Why do potential employers say this to me?

I am having trouble understanding potential employers - i'm living in NJ wanting to relocate to NYC, applying for paralegal jobs - I got 2 call backs from employers.

- I was on the phone less than 5 min.

- the employer said: I don't have anything available right now. I will keep your resume on file.

both of these employers called me - I didn't call them. why would they call me if they didn't have any opportunities?? what am I doing wrong...TY.

The employer called you for 2 reasons. It was to inform you there were no openings at this time (so you would not be wasting your time waiting for them to call and could continue actively seeking employment)-BUT by putting your resume on file they are saying they are interested enough in your abilities to hire you should an opening occur.

There are just so many openings in a law firm for legal assistants or paralegals and those that are there usually stay as long as possible (they have proved their worth and have some job security). You may want to consider applying for a "runners" position and then showing what you have in the paralegal areas and working your way up.

It is amazing that you received phone calls. They were being polite so that you are not wondering what is happening with your resume.

When you send an unsolicited resume you normally don't here back unless there is something. These two are very polite in calling to let you know they don't have a job.

You are not doing anything wrong, they just don't have openings.

Actually you are doing something right. If potential employers who don't have anything at the moment still call you to tell you they are keeping your information on file, your resume impressed them.

Review the conversation that you had with each. What did they ask and what did you say?

Salary? Was your request too high?

Did you answer the phone improperly? Were you eating, chewing gum or acting immature on the call?

Did you ask for benefits that were unusually? Such as dog watching services?

Was there a conflict between your present employer and the firms that you spoke to? Did you insult your present employer?

In your resume did you oversell yourself?

Go over the entire conversation with a close friend and see how you can improve.

Cheers and Good luck!
