Should I write a recommendation?

I was asked to write a recommendation for a friend for a job in the school district I work in. I don't doubt she will do a good job, but what if she messes up? Would that come down on me and maybe hurt my career in the county since I "recommended" her?

You can do one of two things here:

You can write the recommendation, point out the good aspects of her working career and strengths and omit any misgivings you have - as long as you don't tell any blatant lies, this will not affect you in any way.

The other thing you can do is simply refuse to give a recommendation, but this is likely to get back to your friend that you did so, and may cause you some problems.

If it were me, I would give the recommendation, but ask her to kindly remove you as a reference for any future jobs she goes for, saying that as you are friends, if anyone found out that you were personal friends, they might think that it was a biased reference and not take it as being credible.

Do you work for the same department? If you don't, I would write the recommendation. Highlight your friend's strengths and share any anecdotes of how she has used them to overcome problems or succeed. If you stick to the facts and your experiences you are insulated from anything that she does later.

Good luck. :-)
