Registering self-employed...please help?

I was self-employed from 1st of November 2007 until last week but I never registered myself as a self-employed person.

Now I need a new job but obviously I don't have a P60 or P45 so I'm a bit stuck. Although I have kept all of my pay slips.

Can I register now? And will I have to pay a penalty because I never registered?

First of all, if you get a job, you just tell them you were rpeviously self employed and so you don't have a P45. They will give you a P46 which you sign to say its your only job and if you start before 25 May, you will be put straight on a basic personal allowance code, not emergency code.
You will be liable to pay a penalty of 拢100 for not registering as self employed. I suggest you ring your tax office and ask for a self assessment for 07-08, complete it and wait for HMRC to contact you. If you send it in before 30 Sept, HMRC will calculate your tax.
