Who are the most likely to illegally download?

I'm waaaaay way financially lower class, but here in the US even I can afford two up-to-date computers and broadband access, so I'm wondering who, other than teenagers, are the more likely people to illegally download media (music, movies, etc). Lower class, middle class, or upper class?

This is sort of a philosophical answer rather than statistical, but the first demographic I'd mention is age - teenagers, like you said. (who else cares, unless they're going to resell)

As far as the wealth level... I don't think it matters. No matter how much wealth someone has (and some teens do have more than enough), that won't predispose them to pay for the product. The illegal downloading is more of a habit and the thought of getting away with something. And the thought that if something is available for "free" (forget any penalties for getting caught), people would think why should I pay for it if no one else is? So I think all economic levels are the same. Perhaps even more illegal from the more wealthy, if they are coming from a background where they feel above the law, or entitled to steal.

If it is reflected by any job I've ever had in retail, I'd have to say middle to upper middle class. These are the ones most likely to find any way possible to cheat any company they deal with so they can get something for free and support the illusion that they are richer than they really are. Upper class doesn't need to pretend, and lower class is surprisingly too proud to steal on average, which is why they end up being lower class. It's the middle people who live on the most handouts in this society and get away with it.

Lower Class and people like you
